Youth Worker BOOST: A Brief Journey

Youth Worker BOOST: A Brief Journey

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.--Psalm 103:15-16

Being a native of Georgia, I grew up surrounded by azaleas. Every spring, Georgia comes alive with color as the azaleas reach full bloom. Then, almost as quickly as they come, the tiny flowers wither and fade until the next season.

I wonder if David was looking at some of the flowers surrounding him when he wrote these verses?

Whether he was or wasn’t, David realized life was like a blooming plant: growing, reaching maturity, and then fading away. If we read some of David’s psalms, it’s easy to see that he is often consumed (or at least highly in-tune) with what we might call negative emotions. But I don’t think that’s what David is doing here. (Later in the passage he contrasts our brief lives with the forever life of God.) No, I think at this point David is making a case for making every day count. It’s been twisted into a cliché, but it’s true: Life is precious and each day we have on this Earth is a gift. During our brief journey here we should thank God each day for His wonderful gift of life.

But this also speaks to making the most impact with the influence we’ve been given. The students in your ministry need you to give it all you’ve got . . . today. Not tomorrow. Don’t waste any opportunity to make a difference in a student’s life in the name of Christ. Who knows if you will have another chance?

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you is that you would make the most out of the opportunities you’ve been given to bring the message of the gospel to a world dying to hear it.
